Who is simon ross valentine?
I am a well-published writer, part-time lecturer, and freelance journalist with a long-standing interest in history, religion, philosophy, and current affairs. My work explores how belief, ideas, and moral conviction shape public life — and how the past continues to illuminate the present. I describe myself as an 'Incorrigible Dissenter' because I'm not afraid to question settled orthodoxies, whether religious, political, or cultural. True to the English tradition of Dissent, I value conscience over conformity, inquiry over complacency, and principle over fashion. This website gathers my reflections on books, belief, and the intellectual currents that continue to shape our common life.

Having studied religion and history to post-doctoral level, I am firmly convinced that religious ideas have been among the most powerful forces in human history. They have not only helped to establish and to overthrow empires, but have shaped laws, inspired reform movements, justified revolutions, and sustained communities through periods of profound change. Despite the scepticism of post-modern thought, religion has not retreated into irrelevance. On the contrary, it remains one of the most potent influences in the modern world — shaping political movements, moral debates, and cultural identities across continents. To understand our present moment, we must take religious belief seriously: not as a relic of the past, but as a living, dynamic force. Ignore religion, and we misunderstand both the past we have inherited and the world we now inhabit.

My thoughts and opinions have grown out of a strong — but I hope tolerant — Christian faith, and from extensive experience travelling and working abroad. As my book titles will indicate, I have spent considerable time living and working in countries such as Iraq, Kurdistan, and Saudi Arabia. They say 'Travel is the best educator'. In many ways, it is, if the traveller is willing to sit and listen to, and discuss with, the local people he or she meets.
"My hope then is that this website will encourage visitors to think about religion, history, philosophy and have critical awareness of what is going on in the world. But most of all, enjoy the journey of discovering more about this intriguing, beautiful - and sadly so often troubled - world in which we live."
